District Announcements
Daniel Area auditions for Pickens County Has Talent will be held at Edwards Middle School this Saturday, January 28, beginning at 10:00 a.m. More information
4K and 5K Registration Begins January 9
The School District of Pickens County will conduct registration for four-year-old (4K) and five-year-old (5K) kindergarten beginning January 9, 2012.  Children must register at the school in the attendance zone in which they reside and must be registered by their parent/legal guardian.  Registration hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day. Parents are encouraged to register kindergarten students the scheduled dates of January 9 through January 31, 2012.  However, students may be registered at the elementary school in their attendance zone during normal school hours any time before the first day of school begins.

A child who is four years old on or before September 1, 2012 may register for four-year-old kindergarten; however, the child must qualify for the program.  A child who is five years old on or before September 1, 2012 can register for five-year-old kindergarten.

To enroll, a student must reside in Pickens County with his/her parent or legal guardian and provide the following three required documents:
  1. Student’s state-issued birth certificate – not the hospital keepsake copy;
  2. Student’s South Carolina Certificate of Immunization;
  3. Proof of Pickens County residence. A parent or guardian must provide proof of Pickens County residence when a student first enrolls at any school. Acceptable proof of residence is a current electricity, gas, water or cable/satellite bill in the parent/guardian’s name.  The bill must show the service address.
Since 4K programs are funded only for identified four-year old children who have significant readiness deficiencies, students are screened prior to placement.  All elementary schools have 4K programs on site; however, 4K programs for the upcoming school year are contingent on funding.

Welcome to Clemson Elementary School!

International Festival Volunteers
The International Festival planning committee is currently recruiting families to host tables representing countries from around the globe. Table hosts will cook traditional foods for sale and provide decorations and information to educate students about their country. Submit the sign-up sheet by Friday, February 17th to Kate Williams at kate.zaner.williams@gmail.com.

Recycling E-Waste
Don’t throw away your old and unused cell-phones, digital cameras, camcorders, mp3 players, Ipods, GPSs, laptops, notebooks, computer keyboards and computer mice! Clemson Elementary’s GoGreen team and Terracycle will combine efforts to re-purpose and recycle your e-waste, while earning dollars for our school. We’ll collect e-waste during the first week of March at the school and in Clemson neighborhoods. If you’d like to sign up your neighborhood, please contact gogreence@gmail.com. For more information check out our blog: googreece.blogspot.com!

Math Superstars
Because of the bats, we have had to make some changes in classroom spaces.  Due to this, Math Superstars will now meet in Room 501.  Students arriving before 7:30 should go to the cafeteria and wait to be dismissed to Room 501.  Students arriving after 7:30 can go directly to Room 501.  Thank you!

Bat Problem in the Gym
After an inspection by an animal/bat expert and a request to medical personnel for an assessment of the risk, DHEC was consulted late in the afternoon of Friday, January 13th. Their recommendation is that no students or school personnel enter the gym until the roof is free of bats. For this reason I have closed the gym to us and our programs. I informed Steve Figeroua, Recreation Director for the City of Clemson of this status. There will be no school or City activities in the gym until further notice. This time span will last into March.

Chick-Fil-A Core Essentials
This month our Core Essential is self control.  The animal that goes along with this core essential is the monkey.  Self control means choosing to do what you should do instead of what you want to do.  This month, practice showing self control in the choices you make at school and at home.

Clemson Elementary 5K Run
The first annual Clemson Elementary 5K Run/Walk will be held on March 10, 2012 at 9:00 a.m.  There will also be a 1 mile Kid Fun Run at 10:00 a.m.  To race, you will need to complete the attachment and submit by February 18 with a $15 registration fee.  After February 18, the fee is $20.  The Fun Run is $10 by February 18, and $20 after February 18.  Fees include t-shirt and finish line refreshments.  This event not only promotes healthy living, but all proceeds will go to support the fifth grade field trip to Charleston.  Happy Running!

Volunteer Training
The last two volunteer trainings for this school year have been scheduled.  Every person volunteering at the school needs to go through training each year to be a chaperone or work with students in any way unsupervised by a faculty or staff member.  Also they must have a SLED check originating through our District.  This check is current for three years.  These trainings will be offered on January 27 at 5:30 p.m. in the Science Lab and on February 7 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 501.  If you plan to go on a field trip at the end of this school year, please take advantage of these opportunities.
